Only 16.9% of startup founders are women, and only 0.7% are mostly women. This data was revealed by the Mapping of the Brazilian Startup Ecosystem, a survey carried out by the Brazilian Startup Association (Abstartups), which makes it of great importance in the “startup” universe.

For us, it was a mixture of pride and annoyance, seeing that we are part of this share, but we represent a share that is constantly on the rise, and that still needs a lot of energy and resources from the whole ecosystem to match.

Today, with 120 Scooteiras, Scooto represents a small part of the ecosystem: just 1% of companies with 101 to 200 employees. As for the presence of women collaborators, there is a marked discrepancy in a scenario that still shows 19% of companies with no women on staff.

The survey refers to the year 2021 and currently has a base of more than 13,700 registered startups. The database is open and updated in real time, and has more than 7,000 associated startups. In addition, during the months of August and September this year, active responses were extracted from a sample of 2,500 startups from all over Brazil.

What is a startup?

The Brazilian Association of Startups (Abstartups) defines a startup as “a company that is born from an agile and lean business model, capable of generating value for its client, solving a real problem, from the real world, offering a scalable solution for the market, and, to do so, uses technology as a central tool”.
